FAQ: Stash Banking

By Stash Team
Last updated: June 10, 2026

Stash Banking helps you move, spend, and deposit the cash you use day to day, while keeping it connected to the investing tools inside Stash. Stash is not a bank. Banking services are provided by Stride Bank, N.A., Member FDIC.

Your Stock-Back® Card can also help you earn stock rewards on eligible purchases. Learn more about the Stock-Back® Card in this guide, and read about Stock-Back® Rewards in this guide.

This FAQ covers opening a Stash Banking account, adding money, direct deposit, mobile check deposit, transfers, statements, stop payments, and account closure.

Quick facts about Stash Banking

  • Banking provider: Stride Bank, N.A., Member FDIC.

  • FDIC insurance: Eligible deposits are FDIC-insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category.

  • Routing number: 103100195.

  • Account type for direct deposit and tax refunds: Select Checking when a form asks for account type.

  • Investment products are different: Stock rewards and investments are not FDIC insured, not bank guaranteed, and may lose value.

Banking should not feel like a maze. Stash is built to put practical money tools and investing guidance in the same place, so you can spend, save, and build your portfolio with more confidence.

How do I open a Stash Banking account?

  1. Open Stash.

  2. Tap the My Stash tab to go to the home screen.

  3. Under Accounts, tap Add Account.

  4. Select Banking.

  5. Follow the prompts to open and fund your Stash Banking account.

If you do not see the option, make sure your app is updated and that your Stash account information is complete.

How can I add funds to my Stash Banking account?

You can add money several ways: one-time bank transfer, recurring transfer, payment app transfer, cash deposit at participating retailers, direct deposit, or mobile check deposit.

Add funds with a one-time transfer

  1. Use this link to begin a transfer.

  2. Enter the amount you want to transfer.

  3. Select your funding source as the From account.

    • If you’re transferring from an external account, you must link it first.

  4. Select Banking (Cash balance) as the To account.

  5. Review the transfer details.

  6. Tap Transfer to submit.

Timing: Transfers from an external bank usually move through ACH, the Automated Clearing House network. ACH transfers generally process on business days, not weekends or federal holidays, and typically take 2 to 4 business days.

Add funds with recurring transfers

Recurring transfers can help you move money into Stash on a schedule. For setup and editing steps, use this Auto-Stash guide.

Add funds from a payment app like Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal

If you have a balance in a payment app, you may be able to move it to Stash Banking.

You can do this in either of these ways:

  • Add your Stock-Back® Card as a payment method in the payment app, then transfer your balance to Stash. The payment app may charge a fee.

  • Link your Stash Banking account to the payment app using your Stash account and routing numbers.

Always confirm the account number before sending money. A wrong account number can delay or misdirect a transfer.

Add cash at a participating retailer

You can deposit cash to your Stash Banking account at participating retail locations in the U.S., including CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and Rite Aid.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Visit a participating retailer.

  2. Generate a unique barcode for that retailer in the app here.

  3. Show the barcode to the cashier.

  4. Hand the cashier your cash.

  5. Keep your receipt until the deposit appears in your account.

Cash deposit limits: Cash deposits must be between $20 and $999.

Timing: Cash deposits can take up to 30 minutes to appear in your Stash Banking account. If the deposit does not appear after 30 minutes, contact the store where you made the deposit. If the store cannot locate it, contact Stash Support and have your receipt ready.

Add funds with direct deposit

To set up direct deposit, you’ll need your Stash routing number and your Stash Banking account number.

  • Stash routing number: 103100195

  • Stash Banking account number: Your account number is unique to you. It may appear in the format 2684 xxxx xxxx xx when partially hidden.

To find your full account and routing numbers, see the section below titled Where can I view my Stash Banking account number and routing number?

For your paycheck

Mobile deposit FAQ

How much does it cost to deposit a check?

Stash does not charge an additional Stash fee to deposit a check through mobile deposit.

Can I cancel a pending check deposit?

No. Once you submit a check image for deposit, you cannot cancel it in the app.

How long should I keep my check after submitting it?

Keep the check in a safe place for 30 days before destroying it. Stash may need it for verification.

Do not cash or deposit the same check somewhere else after submitting it to Stash. That can cause the deposit to be rejected or reversed.

Do I need to endorse the check?

Yes. Sign the back of the check in blue or black ink and write For mobile deposit only clearly below your signature. If the endorsement is missing or unclear, the check may not be accepted.

How fast will mobile deposit funds be available?

Funds are generally available three business days after Stash accepts the check. Business days exclude weekends and federal holidays.

How will I know when the money is in my account?

Stash will notify you by email when the funds are available. You can also check your transaction history in the app.

How do I take a good picture of my check?

  • Place the check on a flat surface with a dark background.

  • Use good lighting.

  • Make sure all four corners of the check are visible.

  • Hold your phone steady.

  • Tap the screen to focus if needed.

For security, delete any check photos that your phone stores automatically.

What types of checks are accepted for mobile deposit?

Why haven’t I received my direct deposit?

If a direct deposit has not arrived when you expected, these are the most common reasons.

You recently set it up

Direct deposit changes usually take 1 to 2 pay periods. Some payroll providers can take up to 60 days. Until setup is complete, your paycheck may arrive the same way it did before.

It is a weekend or federal holiday

ACH payments do not process on weekends or federal holidays. If payday falls on one of those days, the deposit may process on the next business day.

Your employer or payment provider has not sent it yet

Stash can post a direct deposit only after the payment is received. Ask your payroll department or benefits agency whether the deposit has been sent.

The account information is incorrect

Confirm that your routing number, account number, name, and account type are correct. Use Checking for the account type.

Why are transfers in my Stash Banking account pending?

A pending transfer means the transaction has been started but has not fully processed.

When you add money from an external bank to Stash Banking, your available balance may not update until the ACH transfer is complete. Once complete, the status changes from pending to completed.

Transfers out of your Stash Banking account are generally reflected in your available balance right away, even though the receiving bank may take additional time to post the funds.

Think of ACH like scheduled mail between banks. Stash can show that the transfer was submitted, but the money is not fully settled until the banking network finishes processing it.

How do I withdraw cash from my Stash Banking account?

You can withdraw funds with a standard ACH transfer or an instant debit withdrawal.

Withdraw with a standard ACH transfer

  1. Use this link to begin a transfer.

  2. Enter the amount you want to transfer.

  3. Select Banking (Cash balance) as the From account.

  4. Select your destination account as the To account.

    • If you’re transferring to an external account, you must link it first.

  5. Review the details.

  6. Tap Transfer.

Timing: Funds generally arrive in 2 to 4 business days after the transfer is submitted.

Withdraw with instant debit withdrawal

Instant debit withdrawals let you move up to $1,000 from your Stash Banking account to a linked external debit card for a 1% fee. The transfer usually takes a few minutes.

To use instant debit withdrawal:

Steps:

  1. Use this link to start a transfer.

  2. Select Banking (Cash balance) as the From account.

  3. Select your external debit card as the To account.

  4. Follow the prompts to complete the transfer.
