At Stash, we understand that markets and market conditions change constantly. Whether it’s the challenges posed by inflation or rising interest rates, the rapid pace of technological development, or the latest types of investments like cryptocurrency, Stash wants to help you meet those changes with confidence. So we’re excited to announce that cryptocurrency is now available for investment on our platform.

We believe that investing a small amount in crypto for the long term can help diversify your portfolio and provide exposure to a new and growing technology without dramatically increasing your overall risk. We realize the price of crypto may continue to fluctuate as market conditions change; however, we’re here to help you invest with confidence and guide you every step of the way.

Stash believes an economy with numerous applications and opportunities will develop based on crypto and blockchain technologies. And we also believe that investing a small percentage of your portfolio in crypto can allow you to invest in this future economy. We added crypto at Stash so we can give you the tools and framework you need for long-term crypto investments.

How did Stash choose the cryptos available for investment?

The crypto ecosystem is new and many cryptocurrencies are young. So it’s difficult to say which coins will be the most successful. At Stash, we cannot eliminate the risk involved in the overall cryptocurrency market nor can we eliminate the possibility that any cryptocurrency may fail. Instead, we tried to mitigate these risks by only including the largest, more established cryptocurrencies (and excluding cryptocurrencies that might be more susceptible to price manipulations or are not suited for the long term.). As a result, we have come up with a short yet highly curated list of coins available for investment on Stash.

Even though these coins are among the most established ones, they still have risk. In fact, the possibility of investment loss is real and substantial. That is why it is critically important to learn about each crypto before investing and determine if the investment makes sense to you. If you decide to invest, we strongly advise limiting your overall exposure in cryptocurrencies to roughly 5% (depending on your risk profile) of your overall investment portfolio and no more than 2% in any one coin.

How is investing in Crypto Different at Stash?

Stash is a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) and Fiduciary, which means we are required by law to act in the best interest of our customers and provide the best possible service, including unbiased, personalized advice and educational tools. We pride ourselves on doing what’s best for our customers every step of the way, and that includes being thoughtful and judicious about the investments we offer on our platform.

You may find a longer list of available crypto coins with other companies, but while other brokerages might encourage you to act outside of your best interest in order to make a profit, we believe in responsible and sustainable investing for the long-term. Whether you invest a little or a lot, our flat monthly subscription rates are the same for everyone and we will never encourage you to transact more than you need to in order to meet your financial goals.

Should I invest in crypto?

As long as you have a brokerage account with Stash, you can browse our crypto offerings and decide which investments are right for you. Our Crypto Calculator will help make sure you don’t buy too much crypto and become overexposed relative to the rest of your portfolio. Stash’s Diversification Analysis tool can help you find recommendations for other investments according to your risk profile. If you’re not sure at all where to start with crypto, or you’re concerned about volatility, but you still want to invest in crypto, you might want to try Smart Portofolio. Managed by Stash, Smart Portfolios offer exposure to Bitcoin and Ethereum (through trusts managed by a third party). Smart Portfolio makes automated, regular investments for you and help you invest The Stash Way®. Keep in mind that when you buy or sell crypto investments via Stash, you will be charged an add-on transaction fee.

If you don’t want to invest in crypto at all, that’s also fine. Stash allows you to invest in stocks, bonds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) across sectors. Open an account to get started.
