Frequently asked questions

What is cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency is a virtual currency that, like cash, is a source of purchasing power. It’s also an avenue for investment and, like other investment assets, can be bought with the objective of financial return. Unlike most forms of currency, cryptocurrencies are decentralized, meaning they are not issued, backed, or regulated by a central authority like the U.S. government.

Is buying cryptocurrency a good investment?

Whether crypto will be a good investment for you depends on many factors. As with all investing, the answer comes down to things like your tolerance for risk, both in financial terms and in psychological terms, and your time horizon, as well as how diversified your portfolio is. The volatility of crypto means that the value of your coins can go up or down quickly, and sometimes dramatically.

Are there any fees for crypto?

Yes—crypto trading fees will vary based on your subscription plan. For Stash Growth customers, the fee is 1% per transaction and for Stash+ customers, the fee is 0.8% per transaction. This transaction fee will be deducted from the total amount of each crypto transaction. It will cover execution, custodial, and account maintenance costs in connection with your crypto account and is not part of your Stash Subscription fee.
