Direct deposit can help you get your stimulus check faster.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. government is sending up to $1,200 payments to citizens plus $500 per child. If you qualify for a payment, consider setting up a direct deposit to Stash—you can get your money much faster than waiting for it in the mail.

Our answers to some frequently asked questions.

What is the CARES Act?chevron icon

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Congress recently passed something called the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a $2 trillion relief package that entitles most Americans to a tax-free stimulus check of up to $1,200. Married couples will be eligible for a stimulus check of up to $2,400. Anyone with dependants will be eligible for an additional $500 in stimulus payment per dependant. (Read more about that here.)

Will I get a stimulus payment?chevron icon

If you had adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less, or $150,000 or less for married couples filing a joint return, you should qualify for the full amount of stimulus money—$1,200 for individuals, and $2,400 for married couples filing a join return. Find out more from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) here.

When will I get my stimulus check? chevron icon

The Treasury is expected to start sending out checks the week of April 13. If you haven’t signed up with the IRS for direct deposit of your tax refund for the 2018 and 2019 tax years, your check will be sent by mail, and that could take longer.

In the coming weeks, the Treasury also plans to develop a web-based portal, which will let individuals provide their banking information to the IRS online, so you can receive payments immediately as opposed to waiting for a check in the mail. You can visit the site here.

How do I get my stimulus check? chevron icon

If you already filed your 2019 taxes and signed up for direct deposit, the relief money will be automatically deposited into the bank account you indicated on your tax forms. If you did not sign up for any direct deposit service, you will be mailed a paper check, but that process will take longer. If you’d like to set up direct deposit for your stimulus check into your Stash banking account, go to the IRS CARES Act online portal here and provide your banking account and routing number.

I’m an existing Stash customer, can I get stimulus money through direct deposit?chevron icon

Yes. If you already signed up to direct deposit your tax refund into your Stash banking account when you filed your 2019 taxes, the relief money should also be deposited into your Stash account. If you’re eligible to receive the payment, it will be deposited automatically—you don’t need to do anything further.

The IRS online portal for payment information (referred to as Economic Impact Payments) is now live. If you are eligible for a payment and have not received it yet, you can use this portal to submit or update your direct deposit information on file with the IRS, as well as track the status of your stimulus check. Visit the site here.

How can I get my stimulus payment faster? chevron icon

Stimulus payments made via direct deposit will begin around April 10—however, mailed checks are expected to take up to several months longer. Therefore, electing to receive your stimulus payment through direct deposit can be your best chance at getting your payment amount as quickly as possible. The IRS has made an online portal available where you can input your bank account information for a direct payment. The IRS is also encouraging people to file their 2019 taxes as soon as possible to expedite payments.

I have bad credit, can I open a Stash account to get my stimulus payment?chevron icon

You can still open a Stash banking account if you have bad credit, usually defined as a credit score below 670. We do not perform credit checks prior to or after account openings, but we do go through standard customer identification and verification procedures first.

What can I do with my stimulus payment?chevron icon

The money is meant for you to use to meet basic living expenses, such as paying your rent or mortgage, paying your bills, or purchasing essentials like groceries. If you don’t need the money immediately, consider saving it as part of an emergency fund.

Is direct deposit with Stash secure?chevron icon

Yes. In addition to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) protection on your deposited funds of up to $250,000, Stash goes to great lengths to secure your personal information, and the details of your financial accounts. You can find out more about that here. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commision has assembled this information page to help protect you against stimulus check scams.

Will my stimulus payment impact my tax refund next year?chevron icon

Your stimulus check will not be taxed. This is a one-time, tax-free payment and won’t be counted towards your 2020 income tax return*.
